The biblical evidence for being baptized in the Holy Spirit and the accompanying gift of speaking in tongues is strong and unwavering. To be baptized in the Holy Spirit is to receive a special release of power and supernatural favor from the Holy Spirit. We call this the anointing. It is an empowering experience that has spiritual, physical, and emotional benefits for those who experience it. When Jesus Christ rose from the dead and ascended to heaven, he made a promise to his followers that they would receive "power from on high" (Acts 1:8). That was the outpouring of the Holy Spirit.. That outpouring anointing continues today. When Christians receive baptism in the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues, they are filled with the power of the Holy Spirit. This power equips the believer with the tools to do the work of God in a greater capacity. It also gives them a greater level of boldness and assurance in their faith, allowing them to be more effective in their mission of sharing the gospel with others.
The baptism in the Holy Spirit also provides the believer with supernatural strength and the courage to stand up to any attack they may encounter in their spiritual walk. The gift of speaking in tongues is one of the most often cited signs of being baptized in the Holy Spirit. It involves the inward release of the hidden power of the Holy Spirit, (again, the anointing) causing the believer to speak in a supernatural language that the natural man does not comprehend.
This supernatural language is referred to in the Bible as a "prayer language" (1 Corinthians 14:4). The speaking in tongues experience is an essential part of the empowerment of the Spirit that is given to the believer when they are baptized in the Holy Spirit.
