The Danger of Quitting Too Soon: The Journey of Spiritual Maturity

Trust The ProcessSpiritual maturity is a process. It takes time to grow in the things of God. The danger is found in giving up. Some give up way to soon and won't allow the Holy Spirit and the Word of God to do its work.

You were brought up in what's commonly referred to as a microwave society. That means you want everything instantly. Have you ever seen someone standing in the kitchen in front of their microwave complaining about how long it took to heat something? It's the same with deliveries. It used to take several days to receive a package but now you can order an item and receive it in one or two days. Sometimes you can receive your order same day. Growing up spiritually is not like that. It takes time.

I remember attending a church that had a sign posted on the wall behind the pulpit. It said something like 89 in attendance last Sunday, 5 people saved, 3 people filled with the Holy Spirit, and 2 people sanctified. The number representing sanctified surprised me. That's because sanctification is a process that never ends. In other words, while you are on this Earth, there is never going to come a day when you have finally arrived into holy sainthood. This doesn't take away the need to grow up. Spiritual maturity is necessary and needed. It's necessary because of God's plan for your life and it's needed because of the world you live in.

Apostle Paul wrote of growing up. He said, “That we may be no longer children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, in craftiness, after the wiles of error; but speaking truth in love, we may grow up in all things into him, who is the head, even Christ” (Ephesians 4:14-15). Notice his words: children, tossed, carried about, and growing up.

All of us are somewhere in the process. You, me and everyone you know. It's the process you should be aware of. Let the word of God continue to have its perfect work in you. Submit yourself to God. Renew your mind with the Word and be of good cheer, God is the author and finisher of your faith. Life has ups and downs, mountains and valleys, times and seasons. Learn from them all.
