The Bible talks about the spirit of the world and its danger. In 1 Corinthians 2:12, the apostle Paul writes, "Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God."
In this verse, Paul is referring to the spirit or mindset of the world, which is in contrast to the spirit of God. The spirit of the world can be understood as the prevailing attitudes, beliefs, and values of society that are contrary to God's ways.
This spirit is often characterized by selfishness, materialism, pride, and rebellion against God. It is driven by the desires and philosophies of humans rather than the will of God. The Bible warns us about the danger of conforming to the spirit of the world.
In Romans 12:2, Paul writes, "Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect." This verse emphasizes the need for believers to resist the influence of the world and instead be transformed by the Spirit of God.
The spirit of the world can also lead people astray from God's truth and cause them to follow false beliefs and teachings. In Colossians 2:8, Paul warns, "See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ."
Moreover, the spirit of the world can also bring about moral corruption and disobedience to God's commands. In Ephesians 2:1-3, Paul describes how the spirit of the world can lead people to live in sinful ways, following the desires of their flesh and being children of wrath.
Ultimately, the danger of the spirit of the world lies in the fact that it is in direct opposition to the Spirit of God. James 4:4 says, "You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God."
Following the spirit of the world can lead us away from a close relationship with God and hinder our spiritual growth. In conclusion, the spirit of the world is a deceptive and destructive force that seeks to draw us away from God's will and lead us into sin. As believers, we must be vigilant and renew our minds with the Spirit of God, in order to discern and resist the influence of the world.
Let us take to heart the words of Jesus in John 15:19, "If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you."
