In today's fast-paced world, it is easy to get caught up in the numerous distractions and responsibilities that demand your attention. As a result, you often neglect the most important aspect of your life—your relationship with God.
One of the reasons for this negligence is the lack of focus, thinking, reflecting, and applying God's word in your daily life. However, as a Christian, it is essential to realize the importance of prioritizing these elements in order to strengthen your faith and walk closer with the Holy Spirit. In this essay, you will explore the significance of focus, thinking, reflecting, and applying God's word in your life.
The capacity for focus is the capacity to maintain attention on one thing at a time while avoiding distractions from other things. In your relationship with God, focus is crucial, as it allows you to tune out the noise of the world and focus on Him. I often call focus the ability to see without distraction.
The Bible teaches in Proverbs 4:25, “Let thine eyes look right on, and let thine eyelids look straight before thee.” This verse reminds you to stay focused on God and not be swayed by the things of the world. It is easy to get distracted by your job, relationships, and other worldly desires, but as a Christian, you must consciously choose to keep your focus on the instructive word of God.
Neglecting to focus on God's word can lead to a weak relationship with Him and hinder your spiritual growth. We call this apathy and lukewarmness. Therefore, you must prioritize focus in your daily life to keep your eyes fixed on the word of God and grow closer to Him.
However, focus alone is not enough to strengthen your faith and relationship with Christ. You must also engage in purposeful thinking and reflection. Thinking is one of the lost skills of our generation.
Thinking involves pondering and meditating on God's word, seeking to understand its deeper meanings, and applying it to your life. In Joshua 1:8, God says, “This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth, but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.”
This verse highlights the importance of thinking and reflecting on God's word. By doing so, you gain a deeper understanding of His teachings and are better able to apply them to your life. This, in turn, leads to spiritual growth and a closer relationship with Christ. Reflecting on God's word also allows you to examine yourself and your actions.
In 2 Corinthians 13:5, Paul writes, “Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves; how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?”
Reflection enables you to identify any areas of your life that may be straying from God's will and make necessary changes. It helps us to become more self-aware and strive towards living a life that is pleasing to God.
Through reflection, you can recognize your weaknesses and ask God for strength to overcome them. It also allows you to see your growth and progress in your spiritual journey. Without reflection, you may continue to make the same mistakes and hinder your relationship with God.
Finally, it is not enough to just think and reflect on God's word; you must also apply it to your life. James 1:22 says, “But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.”
This verse emphasizes the importance of applying God's word in your life. As a Christian, you are called to live out your faith through your actions and deeds. This involves not only obeying God's commandments but also living a life that reflects his teachings.
Applying God's word requires intentional effort and a willingness to surrender your will to His. It may not always be easy, but with the Holy Spirit's help, you can strive to apply God's word in your daily life.
To illustrate the significance of focusing, thinking, reflecting, and applying God's word, let's look at the example of Peter. In Matthew 14:28–31, we see Peter stepping out of the boat to walk towards Jesus on the water. At first, he was able to walk on the water, but as soon as he took his eyes off Jesus and focused on the wind and waves, he began to sink. This story highlights the importance of keeping your focus on Jesus, just as Peter did.
Similarly, in John 15:5, Jesus reminds us that, apart from Him, we can do nothing. Therefore, it is crucial to stay focused on God and rely on His strength and guidance in your life. In addition, we see the example of David in the book of Psalms. David was a man after God's own heart, and his writings reflect his constant focus on thinking, reflecting, and applying God's word.
In Psalm 119:11, David writes, “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.” Through his devotion to God's word, David was able to remain focused on God and live a life that pleased him. He also reflects and repents in many of his psalms, such as Psalm 51, where he asks for forgiveness for his sins. David's life serves as an example for you to stay focused on God, think and reflect on His word, and apply it in your daily life.
In conclusion, a lack of focus, thinking, reflecting, and applying God's word in your life can lead to a weak relationship with Him and hinder your spiritual growth. As a Christian, you must make a conscious effort to prioritize these elements in your daily life. Through focus, you keep your eyes fixed on God. Through purposeful thinking and reflection, you gain a deeper understanding of His teachings and strive to live a life that reflects His love. Finally, applying God's word in your life allows you to truly live out your faith and strengthen your relationship with Him. As you follow these principles, you will be like the wise man in Matthew 7:24, who built his house upon the rock of God's word, making your faith strong and unshakeable.
