Aligning Our Emotions with God's Word: A Christian Perspective

Emotions are an integral aspect of the human experience. They allow us to feel and express a wide range of emotions, from joy and happiness to anger and sadness. While emotions can be beneficial and enriching, they can also be overwhelming and lead us down destructive paths if not kept in check.

However, as Christians, we know that our emotions need to be submitted to God’s word in order to align them with His will for our lives. In this essay, we will explore the importance of submitting our emotions to God’s word and how the Bible provides us with guidance and understanding on this matter.

First and foremost, it is crucial to understand that our emotions come from God. He created us in His image, and that includes our ability to feel and express emotions. However, due to the Fall, our emotions have been tainted by sin, and this is why we must constantly check them against God’s word. As Proverbs 14:12 states, “There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.”

Our emotions can deceive us, leading us to think and act in ways that are contrary to God’s will for our lives. We must remember that God’s word is the ultimate standard of truth, and it is through His word that we can align our emotions with His perfect will. One way to submit our emotions to God’s word is through self-reflection and prayer.

In Psalm 139:23-24, David asks God to “Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” This shows us that it is essential to have a humble and open heart when examining our emotions.

We must allow God to reveal any hidden areas of sin or wrongdoing in our hearts, so we can repent and realign our emotions with His truth. Prayer is also crucial in this process, as it allows us to communicate with God and seek His guidance and strength to overcome any negative emotions that may arise.

Furthermore, studying and meditating on God’s word is crucial in submitting our emotions to Him. In Romans 12:2, we are instructed to “be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”

As we immerse ourselves in the Bible, we can gain a deeper understanding of God’s character and His will for our lives. This can help us discern which emotions are in line with His truth and which ones are not.

Additionally, the Bible provides us with many examples of individuals who struggled with their emotions, such as David, Elijah, and Jonah. Studying these stories can help us learn from their experiences and gain wisdom on how to handle our own emotions in a way that pleases God. Lastly, submitting our emotions to God’s word also means being obedient to His commands.

In John 14:15, Jesus says, “If ye love me, keep my commandments.” Obedience to God’s word requires us to submit our desires and emotions to Him and follow His teachings, even when it goes against what we may feel or want. This can be challenging, but as we continue to trust in Him, He will strengthen us and help us overcome any emotional struggles we may face.

In conclusion, as Christians, it is crucial to submit our emotions to God’s word. Our emotions can be tricky and deceiving, but through prayer, self-reflection, studying the Bible, and obedience to God’s commands, we can align them with His truth and live a life that pleases Him. As it says in Psalm 119:105, “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” Let us allow God’s word to guide and direct our emotions, so we can walk in His truth and experience His peace and joy.
