The Holy Spirit is an important part of the Christian faith and is a person of the triune Godhead, equal to the Father and the Son. As such, He is an important part of our lives, and understanding Him is essential to living the Christian life. Here are twelve important things to know about the Holy Spirit and the Scriptures that back them up.
First, the Holy Spirit is God. Acts 5:3-4 tells us, "But Peter said, ‘Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit, and to keep back part of the price of the land? While it remained, was it not yours? And after it was sold, was it not in your own power? Why have you conceived this thing in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God.’" The Holy Spirit is not just a force or an influence; He is God.
Second, the Holy Spirit is a person. John 14:26 tells us, "But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things and bring to your memory all things that I said to you." He is not just an influence; he is a person who speaks, teaches, and remembers.
Third, the Holy Spirit is equal to the Father and the Son. In Matthew 28:19, we read, "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit." This verse affirms the triune Godhead, with the Holy Spirit being equal to the Father and the Son.
Fourth, the Holy Spirit is omnipresent. Psalm 139:7 says, "Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence?" This verse teaches us that the Holy Spirit is everywhere, filling and surrounding us.
Fifth, the Holy Spirit is a comforter and counselor. John 16:7 says, "But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things and bring to your memory all things that I said to you." He provides us with comfort and guidance in times of need.
Sixth, the Holy Spirit gives us spiritual gifts. 1 Corinthians 12:4 tells us, "Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit." This verse tells us that the Holy Spirit provides us with different gifts to be used for the glory of God.
Seventh, the Holy Spirit convicts us of sin. John 16:8 says, "And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, of righteousness, and of judgment." The Holy Spirit convicts us of our sin and guides us to righteousness.
Eighth, the Holy Spirit helps us live a holy life. Galatians 5:22–23 tells us, "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Against such there is no law." The Holy Spirit helps us live a life pleasing to God.
Ninth, the Holy Spirit helps us understand God’s word. John 14:26 tells us, "But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you." He helps us to better understand and remember God’s word.
Tenth, the Holy Spirit gives us power to witness. Acts 1:8 says, "But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth." He gives us the power and courage to spread the Gospel.
Eleventh, the Holy Spirit intercedes for us. Romans 8:26 tells us, Likewise, the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered." The Holy Spirit intercedes for us when we don’t know what to pray for.
Finally, the Holy Spirit seals us until the day of redemption. Ephesians 1:13 memory Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise." The Holy Spirit seals us until the day of redemption, confirming our salvation.
The Holy Spirit is an important part of the Christian faith, and understanding Him helps us live a life pleasing to God. He is God, He is a person, He is equal to the Father and the Son, He is omnipresent, He is our comforter and counselor, He gives us spiritual gifts, He convicts us of sin, He helps us live a holy life, He helps us understand God’s word, He gives us power to witness, He intercedes for us, and He seals us until the day of redemption. Knowing and understanding these things about the Holy Spirit is essential to living a life of faith.
