Gaston B. Cashwell was an American evangelist and Pentecostal leader in the early 1900s. He is best known for his leadership of the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World (PAW) and the Pentecostal Church of God (PCG). Cashwell is remembered for his tireless work to spread the Pentecostal message throughout the United States and the world. Cashwell was born in 1883 in Catawba County, North Carolina. He had a very difficult childhood, having to work in the tobacco fields to help support his family. At the age of sixteen, he left home in search of a better life. He eventually settled in Spartanburg, South Carolina, where he began preaching in local churches.In 1906, he attended a Pentecostal camp meeting and experienced a spiritual renewal. He was baptized in the Holy Spirit and began to preach the Pentecostal message. Cashwell soon began traveling and preaching throughout the South. He joined the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World (PAW) in 1907 and was ordained by PAW leader Bishop William H. Durham.
Cashwell was an effective evangelist and became a popular speaker in the PAW. He was an early proponent of racial reconciliation among Pentecostals, and in 1908, he became the first African American to preach at a PAW General Council. In 1919, Cashwell was elected to the General Council of the PAW.
He was re-elected in 1923 and served as the General Secretary of the PAW from 1924 to 1928. Under Cashwell’s leadership, the PAW experienced tremendous growth, and the organization became the largest African American Pentecostal denomination in the United States. During this time, Cashwell also founded the Pentecostal Church of God (PCG) in 1925. The PCG was the first African-American Pentecostal denomination to be established in the United States.
Cashwell was an ardent proponent of the Pentecostal message and worked tirelessly to spread the gospel throughout the United States and the world. He traveled extensively and held large Pentecostal revivals throughout the United States, including one in New York City in 1926. He also traveled to Africa in 1928 and established churches there. He was a well-respected leader in the Pentecostal movement and was known for his compassion and humility.
As already said, Gaston B. Cashwell is remembered for his role in the revival of Pentecostalism at the Azusa Street Mission in Los Angeles. Cashwell attended many of the meetings at the mission and was deeply moved by the spiritual renewal he experienced there.
He later recalled, "People were falling under the power of God, shouting and praising God. It was a glorious time." Cashwell was inspired to spread the Pentecostal message, and he joined the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World (PAW) in 1907. He was ordained by PAW leader Bishop William H. Durham and began to preach the Pentecostal message throughout the South. Cashwell’s tireless efforts to spread the Pentecostal message are remembered today as a major contribution to the revival of Pentecostalism.
Cashwell passed away in 1941, but his legacy lives on. He left behind a thriving Pentecostal movement in the United States and throughout the world. His influence can still be felt today in the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World and the Pentecostal Church of God, both of which he helped found. His ministry and passion for spreading the Pentecostal message will never be forgotten.
