The Life of Evan Roberts: A Welsh Preacher and Revivalist

Evan Roberts was a Welsh preacher and revivalist who was instrumental in sparking the 1904–1905 Welsh Revival, a historic period of increased religious fervor and spiritual awakening that spread throughout Wales. Born in 1878 in Loughor, Wales, to a poor coal-mining family, Roberts was raised in the Calvinistic Methodist Church.

From an early age, he had a deep and abiding faith and was known for his passionate prayers and enthusiasm for the Bible. At the age of 17, Roberts began preaching in the local churches. His straightforward, passionate style of preaching soon gained a wide following, and he began to travel throughout Wales, sharing the gospel. His message was one of personal repentance and spiritual transformation, often accompanied by dramatic physical manifestations among those present. Roberts' ministry and message were deeply controversial.

The Calvinistic Methodist Church was wary of his unorthodox approach to evangelism, and some of the members of the church even accused him of heresy. Nevertheless, his ministry quickly began to bear fruit; hundreds of people began to accept Christ, and spiritual revival began to spread throughout Wales. The Welsh Revival of 1904–1905 was a period of intense spiritual activity.

Meetings were held in churches, chapels, and homes, often lasting late into the night. People were filled with conviction for sin, and many experienced dramatic physical manifestations, including shouting, weeping, and even collapsing. It was estimated that as many as 100,000 people were converted during this time, and the spiritual awakening spread to other parts of Great Britain.

The Welsh Revival had a profound impact on society. Those who had been converted began to live out their faith in tangible ways. Reports of changed lives, improved relationships, and increased charity were common. The Welsh Revival also had a strong influence on the emerging Pentecostal movement, and the experience of the Welsh Revival was often referenced in early Pentecostal writings.

Despite the success of the Welsh Revival, Evan Roberts eventually left the public ministry. In 1911, he retired to a small cottage in Aberystwyth, where he lived in relative obscurity for the remainder of his life. He died in 1951 at the age of 73.

Evan Roberts is remembered as one of the most important figures in the history of Welsh revivalism. He was a powerful preacher whose passionate message of repentance and transformation sparked a spiritual awakening that left a lasting impact on Wales and beyond. His legacy is remembered in the many churches, organizations, and ministries that still exist today, and the Welsh Revival of 1904–1905 is seen as one of the most significant religious movements in history.
