Familiar Spirits: What the Bible Says About Them

Are you aware of the dangers of familiar spirits and divination? Have you ever wondered what the Bible says about them? Discover the power of God over these spiritual activities and learn how to stay away from them. Learn how to resist the devil and be freed from spiritual bondage.
Familiar spirits, or demonic spirit guides, are supernatural entities that are believed to be able to provide assistance, guidance, and wisdom to false prophets and evil workers. They are believed to be the spirits of deceased people or other supernatural beings. In the Bible, familiar spirits are mentioned several times in a negative context.

In Leviticus 19:31, for example, the Lord commands the Israelites not to turn to mediums or seek out familiar spirits, as it is an abomination to Him. In Deuteronomy 18:11, the Lord warns against consulting with familiar spirits, as it will lead to spiritual corruption.

The Bible also speaks of the power of familiar spirits, as demonstrated by the Witch of Endor, who summoned the spirit of the prophet Samuel in 1 Samuel 28:7–20. The Bible is clear that familiar spirits are to be avoided, as they can lead to spiritual bondage and destruction.

The New Testament does not mention familiar spirits directly, but there are several passages that address spiritual activities related to them.

In 2 Corinthians 11:14–15, Paul warns the Corinthians against believing in false spirits and teachings, which could be seen as a reference to familiar spirits and spirits of deception. In Ephesians 4:27, Paul commands believers to not give the devil a foothold by giving in to the temptations of demonic spirits. In 1 John 4:1–3, John warns against believing every spirit, which could be interpreted as a warning against turning to familiar spirits. As a matter of fact, he says to test the spirits. In other words, to put them on trial.

Finally, in James 4:7, James exhorts believers to resist the devil, which could be seen as a warning against the influence of familiar spirits. Overall, the New Testament emphasizes the need for believers to stay away from familiar spirits and their teachings.

In Acts 8:9, there was a certain man, called Simon, who before in the same city used sorcery and bewitched the people of Samaria, giving out that he himself was some great one. I would suspect that he had a spirit of divination that would have prophesied through him.

Those in deliverance ministry often see the spirit of divination and familiar spirits working together in false prophetic sayings. The Bible speaks clearly against divination and its associated practices. In Deuteronomy 18:10–12, the Lord commands the Israelites not to practice divination or soothsaying, as it is an abomination to Him. In Isaiah 8:19, the Lord warns against consulting those who practice divination, as they are driven by their own spirits and not by the Lord.

In Acts 16:16–18, the apostle Paul casts out a spirit of divination from a girl, demonstrating the power of God over such spirits. In Galatians 5:20, Paul lists divination as an example of works of the flesh that will lead to death. In Revelation 21:8, divination is listed as one of the sins that will lead to the lake of fire.

Overall, the Bible speaks clearly against divination and its associated practices, as they are an abomination to the Lord. The Bible is clear in its warnings against familiar spirits and divination. They are an abomination to the Lord and can lead to spiritual bondage and destruction.

Believers are called to resist the devil, test the spirits, and avoid those who practice divination. Only through the power of God can we be freed from the influence of these evil spirits. Disciples of Christ should all use spiritual discernment around suspected familiar spirits and spirits of divination.

The most important thing I want to stress is the power of God over familiar spirits and divination. This is important to emphasis because it shows the authority and sovereignty of God over these spiritual manifestations and reminds believers that they should seek protection and guidance from the Lord and not rely on false prophets or seek out the assistance of familiar spirits.
