Christian Last Will and Testament: A Guide for Leaving an Inheritance to Loved Ones

Christian Last Will And Testament My Thoughts

Do you want to make sure that your wishes are carried out after you cross over? Learn how to make a responsible and sensible last will and testament. Writing a will is a responsible and sensible action. It not only helps your loved ones avoid unnecessary stress during a difficult time, but it is also a way to ensure that your legacy is carried out in accordance with your wishes. As Christians, we must take the time to plan ahead and make sure our last wishes are taken into account. Writing out a last will and testament can be a great way to ensure your desires are respected.

The responsible Christian makes out a will, leaving behind an inheritance. The question is, "To whom do you leave an inheritance?" This matter of wealth transfer is very personal. I’m not offering you financial advice, but here are some of my thoughts on who you should consider when making out your will and beneficiaries of a life insurance policy.

SPOUSE
There's no doubt your spouse should get enough to live on. Your life insurance policy should pay off your home mortgage and your funeral expenses. (A good goal is to leave your spouse debt-free.)

CHILDREN
Biblically, the children would receive an inheritance, with one of them receiving a double portion, or twice as much (Deuteronomy 21:17). This child would be the one entrusted with caring for the surviving spouse.

GRANDCHILDREN
Grandchildren should also be part of that inheritance transfer. The amount is determined by you. It doesn’t have to be in equal amounts, nor does it have to be in the form of cash. It can be in the form of a prepaid education, for example. Scripture declares, "A good man leaves an inheritance to his children's children" (Proverbs 13:22).

In my opinion, your surviving family members—spouse, children, or grandchildren—should get nothing in the form of an inheritance blessing if they are lawless, God-hating, covenant breakers. Inform them that they are not eligible for any Biblical inheritance transfer while you are still alive. Don’t give them your hard-earned money to squander.

CHURCH
Leave something for your local church. No matter the amount, it’s a tremendous blessing to your local church when you leave something that helps relieve the financial burden. (Our church is Spirit of Life Ministries of Fort Lauderdale, Inc.)

PASTOR, MINISTER
You have been blessed by someone in the ministry who taught, prayed, cared for, and laid their lives down in the service of Christ. Scripture says, "Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honor, especially they who labor in the word and doctrine" (1 Timothy 5:17). Don’t forget the faithful minister of God who helped you.

THOSE THAT HONOR YOU
Make a list of the names of those who have blessed and honored you. You know who they are. It could be one person or twenty-five people. These are those who stood with you, honored you, loved you, helped you accomplish your vision, and blessed you throughout your life.

It is critical to specify exactly what you want to leave and for whom. Whether it's cash, collectibles, jewelry, photos, land, vehicles, pets, etc. Having a last will and testament keeps your estate out of the hands of the state and makes it clear what you want done with your estate.

I pray my personal thoughts will help you in the decision-making process.
